well, almost... As you probably know, I've been painting my little heart out over the last couple of years, and absolutely love the new direction my life has taken. I'm immersed in creativity, involved in community through my art, and, here's the key, I'm l-e-a-r-n-i-n-g to share my art more. How?
First, let me tell you a story
Do you have a cuppa and a comfy cushion ready? *SPOILER ALERT* like this cushion that I designed
10 years ago I had a 3 year old, I was working two part-time jobs and I was a Playcentre Mum (setting up play groups, advocating Maori language during sessions, and helping the Centre which is wholly run by volunteers). Busy? You bet! But something was missing, and I didn't really know what that was. Cue: job seeking. I remember going to an agency to register (my paid work was Secretary/Exec Assistant/Desktop Publisher) and when the consultant was quizzing me on what I enjoyed doing in my spare time (ha!) I vividly remember telling her about my latest project, which was playing around with digital files to make designs for fabric. She was dumbfounded and began enquiring further about my creativity. "Oh, it's just a hobby", "I don't really know what I'm doing", "I don't think my work is very good" are all responses I think I gave.
Well, I can tell you, life has a funny way of coming back around again, doesn't it?
Recently I came across an ad for a free 5 day surface pattern design course. What? I'm in! I was blown away with how much fun I had and that now, 10 years later, there was someone teaching the very thing I'd dabbled in all that long time ago. I was beyond excited when an online Surface Design course called IMMERSION was offered. I signed up, and IT HAS BEGUN. I AM NOW LEARNING HOW TO DESIGN PATTERNS for just about any surface you can think of! I see this as such an appealing way to share my art - the thought of everyday people like me buying fabric etc to make their own projects or home decor makes me so happy.
